Ballarat has become one of my favorite spots for day trips with my dog, and a big part of that is the number of dog-friendly cafes. Whenever we head over, I make sure to hit up some of these gems, which not only cater to our taste buds but also welcome dogs with open arms. Here’s a guide to some of my favorites, including personal recommendations for what to try!
Yellow Espresso
📍 13 Sturt St, Ballarat Central VIC 3350
Yellow Espresso is always a must for us. Their specialty coffee is top-notch, and the all-day breakfast menu never disappoints. We usually grab a table out front under the covered patio so my dog can chill with us. Last time, I tried the smashed avocado, which was fresh and flavorful, while the matcha latte was surprisingly smooth and balanced. According to the reviews, the house-made sweets and brekkie rolls are also popular choices. It's such a cozy spot, and I love that the staff always bring out water bowls for the pups.
What to Try: Definitely go for the smashed avo on sourdough or indulge in a house-made sweet treat. Coffee-wise, their flat whites are a hit.
📍 24-28 Armstrong St N, Ballarat Central VIC 3350
Hop Temple is tucked away down Hop Lane, and I love the vibe here. They have a huge, covered beer garden where your dog can happily hang out while you explore their range of craft beers. I’ve tried their wood-fired pizzas, which were delicious, especially paired with one of the local brews. The atmosphere is always buzzing, and the staff are super welcoming to dogs. Reviewers rave about the casual, friendly vibe, and many mention the loaded fries and burgers as must-try dishes. We definitely agree!
What to Try: Grab one of their wood-fired pizzas and a beer from their extensive selection. The loaded fries are a crowd favorite.
📍 402 South St, Ballarat VIC 3350
For a laid-back meal, The Royal Oak Hotel is one of our favorites. They have a huge, enclosed beer garden where dogs can roam while you relax. The food is classic pub fare, and the parmas here are legendary. We tried their steak last time, and it was cooked to perfection. Reviews also mention their burgers as being a top choice, so that's next on my list to try! It’s such a chill spot to kick back with your pup after a long walk.
What to Try: The parma is always a winner, or if you’re feeling like something a bit more filling, go for the steak. And of course, don’t forget a cold drink.
The Bridge Mall Farmers Market
📍 Bridge Mall, Ballarat Central VIC 3350
Whenever we’re in town on the first or third Saturday of the month, we make sure to stop by the Bridge Mall Farmers Market. It’s not your typical café, but it’s such a great spot to explore with your dog. They’ve got everything from fresh produce to handmade goods, and there’s always something tasty to snack on. I usually pick up some local baked treats for myself and grab something from the food stalls for my dog.
What to Try: Grab something from the local food stalls and enjoy the relaxed, friendly market atmosphere. There’s often freshly baked bread or pastries that are hard to resist!
Each of these spots makes exploring Ballarat with a dog such a fun experience. From coffee to tapas to classic pub meals, there’s always something delicious on offer, and I love knowing my dog is just as welcome as I am. So, next time you’re in town, grab a seat at one of these dog-friendly spots and enjoy!
